When selecting fabrics, be aware of its durability to withstand use. We have an abundance of quality fabrics to suit any budget and room, from commercial to children's playrooms...
COLOUR & PATTERN of fabrics are important for appearance, but fabric should be properly designed. A choice of fabric may be beautiful material for a sofa but functionality for daily use is also important for longevity.
THICKNESS of a fabric is another factor buyers should focus on. Thinner fabrics can be used for simple upholstery, and thicker fabrics used for high-use upholstery such as a family room chair. Safety should also be considered due to highly flammable fabrics.
NATURAL FABRICS
Made of plant fibers or animal products, are durable and luxurious...
- Cotton resists to wear, fading and pilling, but not resistant to soil and wrinkling.
- Leather is extremely durable and can be cleaned.
- Linen is breathable material made from the fibers of the flax plant, resistant to fading and pilling but soils and wrinkles.
- Silk requires professional cleaning.
- Wool is durable and resistance to fading, pilling and wrinkling.
SYNTHETIC FABRICS
Man-made, some requiring raw materials from natural fibers...
- Acetate, developed as imitation silk, is resistant to pilling and shrinking but not ideal for for everyday furniture
- Acrylic, developed as imitation wool, resists wrinkling, fading and soiling.
- Nylon, often blended with other fabrics to make it stronger and doesn’t wrinkle or soil, but may fade and pill.
- Polyester, usually blended with other fabrics, is resistant to wrinkling and fading.
- Rayon is durable and affordable.
- Velvet, made up of synthetic fibers: linen, silk and cottons, is a great choice for many upholstery projects as it consists of very short piles cut to the same length, but thick fabric and difficult to clean. Ideal for curtains but should be avoided for heavily used furniture.
CONSIDER THE ROOM AND USAGE...
- Durable fabrics are ideal for high traffic areas
- Expensive fabrics are ideal for adult areas and less traffic areas
- Less Expensive fabrics are more suitable for children's rooms due to the wear and tear or drawing. Safety is also a concern with highly flammable fabrics. Decor also changes as children grow and can be changed over the years as they grow.
